White Fillings are the most natural way to repair damaged teeth — based in Bentleigh East.

White fillings (also called resin or composite fillings) are the main treatment for repairing and preventing further damage to a decayed or broken tooth. Metal fillings also exist, but at dentist we favour white fillings as we insist on using only the most modern filling types.

Our dentists will pick the filling material to match the colour of your teeth so fillings cannot be seen. They replicate the natural shape and appearance of a tooth. They also help restore the function of a tooth. We can also remove and replace old metal fillings with white (or tooth coloured) fillings, to give you the smile that you've always wanted!

How our white fillings process works

The process of adding a white filling to a tooth is almost identical to any other filling undertaken: Firstly, the dentist will take an x-ray of your decayed tooth and then decide the best form of treatment based on the results. You will then be given a local anaesthetic and no treatment will be undertaken until it has taken away all sensitivity from the tooth.

Once the area is numb, the dentist will use a small drill to remove the damaged areas of the tooth, creating a small hole free from decay. The tooth is then prepared using a mild acid and dental cement to help secure the white filling, which is then added and hardened in stages using a bright light.

The final step, when the final layer of white filling composite is added the surface will be sculpted to fit in with the surrounding teeth, ensuring a level and even bite.

Whilte fillings are the best way to fix a cavity in your 'smile zone'

Composite fillings, or white fillings, have grown in popularity among patients and dentists for years. The main reason for this growth in popularity is their ability to blend in with your natural teeth.

This ability comes in handy when you have a cavity in your smile zone, which is the area from your canine teeth to your central incisors. Prior to applying the tooth-coloured resin to a cavity, a dentist can select an appropriate shade of white, one that matches the natural hue of your teeth.

If you have a cavity develop between your two central incisors, a white filling would mean that you can smile without feeling self-conscious.

Advantages of tooth coloured Fillings

  • They can closely match your tooth colour and appearance.
  • They require very little removal of the healthy tooth structure around the decay.
  • The bonding of white fillings to the enamel of your tooth restores up to 95% of the original tooth’s structure.
  • They fully harden in seconds, compared to some materials that require longer wait times or more visits.
  • If they are damaged they can be repaired
  • They are durable.
  • They can be placed in a single visit.
  • There is no reaction to temperature changes. Because the composite materials used in white fillings do not expand or contract with hot or cold temperatures (like silver fillings), they help protect the integrity of your tooth, protecting it from cracks and fractures.
  • They are mercury free – Metal amalgam fillings are made of about 50% mercury, which may potentially be a health risk for some patients. White fillings are completely mercury free.

Any filling need to be replaced they are not permanent. The average life span of white fillings range from 5 to 15 years. Composite fillings lasts around 5 years or so. Glass ionomers are less resistant and lasts around 5 years but ceramic fillings last for 15 years or so.
Modern white fillings are much stronger than those from several years ago. They are also bonded to the tooth to effectively seal the margin. Amalgam fillings just plug the hole and do not seal the margins or reinforce teeth. They are, however, very strong and a well-placed amalgam filling can last for several years.
White-coloured fillings are mercury free fillings. They won't harm your health like the mercury fillings can. The tooth-coloured fillings are made of a composite mixture of glass and plastic. These fillings are not only less toxic than silver amalgam fillings; they're much more pleasing to the eye
Fillings and crowns sometimes loosen and fall out. This is rarely an emergency, but it can be painful because the exposed tooth tissue is often sensitive to pressure, air or hot and cold temperatures. In some cases, a filling or crown may come loose because decay has developed underneath it.
Can I change my silver fillings to white? Yes, silver fillings can be replaced with white fillings but other options such as inlays and onlays may be more suitable when the filling is large.
If your dental fillings are defective or show decay, it's important to replace them. Untreated decay may eventually lead to an infection (abscess). In some cases, replacing a dental filling may benefit the long-term health of your tooth.
