Stress management therapy
We treat teeth grinding by addressing the underlying cause — based in Bentleigh East.
Treatment for teeth grinding depends. If you find yourself clenching at times throughout the day, then a simple solution would be to wear a mouth guard that can be fitted by your dentist. This will protect your teeth from any possible damage and relieve some of the pressure in your jaw muscles due to teeth clenching.
If however, you are experiencing an actual bruxism condition where you clench and grind your teeth every night as you sleep, then this is something that needs professional care from a dentist who will provide treatment including relaxing medications and corrective therapies such as reconstructive surgery or restorative treatments like dental implants if needed. Teeth gritting treatment might also include muscle relaxants to ease painful jaw.

Teeth Grinding in Children
Many parents will have noticed the sound of their children grinding their teeth at some point, often as they sleep. However, because children’s teeth and jaws change and grow so quickly it’s not usually a damaging habit that requires treatment and most outgrow it as they get older.
The main risk factors for tooth grinding in children include:
- Pain when teeth are coming through
- Emotional stress and anxiety
- Medications such as antidepressants, anti-psychotics
- Medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Many of the signs that children grind their teeth are the same as for adults. The management of teeth grinding in children depends on the amount of wear, the child’s age, the symptoms experienced and the needs of the child and parent or caregiver. A dentist or other oral health professional is best placed to make a full assessment of each child’s situation.
Cosmetic Injections As Teeth Grinding Treatments
Cosmetic injections are a great way to help relieve stress and tension in the jaw muscles. Did you know they can also reduce teeth grinding? Don't worry, this treatment won't change how your face looks or feel but it will make sure that headaches aren’t caused by tightness somewhere else on your body! We correct teeth and mouth misalignment to help stop teeth grinding
A lot of people don't grind or clench their teeth badly enough to require therapy, but it is always important to see a dentist to have a comprehensive exam and try to find out why you are grinding.
An abnormal bite or missing or crooked teeth can be the cause of bruxism, so in some cases, a dental treatment can solve the problem.
Orthodontic correction may be needed if the teeth or jaws are poorly aligned.
However, if the problem persists, some further intervention might be necessary to prevent more tooth damage and relieve jaw pain or discomfort, like a personalized mouth guard made by your dentist, stress management therapies or use of medications.
Reduce stress and stimulants
One of the most common causes of teeth grinding is an abnormally high level of stress encountered in everyday life. Since more than half of teeth grinding cases are due to stress retention, there’s a high chance that if you deal with the stress then you can alleviate the symptoms associated with teeth grinding.
Try and avoid any stimulants, and if you can’t then at least try to avoid them after dinner. Coffee, alcohol, soda and sugar are all stimulants that could cause you to grind your teeth at night while you sleep.
Treat Teeth Grinding With Mouth Guards
If you have a severe case of teeth grinding, then it’s likely that your dentist will prescribe the use of a mouth guard or splint.
While this doesn’t treat the root cause of your grinding, or in fact stop it, it does help to protect your teeth and gums and redistributes the force evenly.
You can buy a mouth guard over the counter in a chemist, but getting one custom made by your dentist is the best option.

Some possible signs that you grind your teeth:
- A sore, painful jaw.
- Headache.
- Earache.
- Increased sensitivity in teeth when exposed to hot or cold.
- Facial pain.
- Teeth that have been damaged – flattened, chipped, or worn down.
- Difficulty sleeping.
- Stiff shoulders.
Most people probably grind and clench their teeth during sleep from time to time. Occasional teeth grinding, does not usually cause harm, but when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis, the teeth can be damaged and other complications can arise, such as jaw muscle discomfort or TMJ pain
It is possible. It may cause disrupted sleep, not only for the teeth grinder, but also for their bed partners.
Caffeine largely contributes to feelings of anxiety and stress which often lead to teeth grinding. We often recommend that patients only drink one caffeinated beverage in the morning or none at all. It is especially important for people with bruxism to stop drinking caffeine in the latter part of the day
One thing that stress will do is increase adrenaline, which mobilizes energy in the body and can manifest in teeth grinding when you're not moving your body. Stress can also disrupt the chemicals that regulate sleep, which can lead to sleep-related disorders like insomnia and bruxism.
