Dental Mouth Guards Bentleigh East
Simple fitted mouth guards to tackle dental wear and tear — based in Bentleigh East.
Teeth grinding, also known as ‘bruxism’, occurs when a person grinds or clenches their teeth. It may seem like the person is chewing but in reality, they are not and it usually happens at night time. Done occasionally, teeth grinding doesn’t pose much harm but if done regularly, it can damage teeth and oral health.
If you grind your teeth, your dentist may recommend a custom-made mouthguard. This is a specially fitted plastic guard that fits over your top or bottom teeth. A mouthguard is one of the most successful and cost-effective means to stop teeth grinding. It is typically worn at night but can also be used during the day if needed.

How to treat teeth grinding
Treatment for teeth grinding depends. If you find yourself clenching at times throughout the day, then a simple solution would be to wear a mouth guard that can be fitted by your dentist. This will protect your teeth from any possible damage and relieve some of the pressure in your jaw muscles due to teeth clenching.
If however, you are experiencing an actual bruxism condition where you clench and grind your teeth every night as you sleep, then this is something that needs professional care from a doctor or dentist who will provide treatment including relaxing medications and corrective therapies such as reconstructive surgery or restorative treatments like dental implants if needed. Teeth gritting treatment might also include muscle relaxants to ease painful jaw.
Affordable mouth guards
If you have a severe case of teeth grinding, then it’s likely that your dentist will prescribe the use of a mouth guard or splint.
While this doesn’t treat the root cause of your grinding, or in fact stop it, it does help to protect your teeth and gums and redistributes the force evenly.
You can buy a mouth guard over the counter in a chemist, but getting one custom made by your dentist is the best option.
Correct teeth and mouth misalignment
Misalignment of teeth or a misaligned bite can be caused by many factors, but they are fixable with dental procedures. Your dentist may fit you with Invisalign braces to align the natural tooth alignment in your mouth and correct an improper chewing pattern if necessary; alternatively, 6-month brackets (or more) will also work for patients who want quicker results from their treatments. If this isn't enough correction during regular checkups because symptoms have gotten worse over time: You could need some reconstruction too!

What does a mouth guard actually do?
Mouthguards, also called mouth protectors, help cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to your lips, tongue, face or jaw.
Can mouth night guards ruin your teeth?
Often, deep grooves will eventually form in the night guard from the force of the grinding. The night guard prevents this same force from causing damage to the teeth. Without a night guard, enamel can be worn down excessively, leading to tooth sensitivity.
It's not uncommon for patients to confuse sports guards with night guards. While both of these oral appliances protect your teeth, they do so in different ways. A sports guard or mouth guard protects your smile while playing contact sports. A night guard stops you from grinding or clenching teeth while you sleep.
Mouthguards cover your teeth to protect teeth and gums. Custom-fitted mouthguards fit and protect your teeth better than over-the-counter mouthguards. Night guards can ease bruxism (teeth grinding). Kids and adults should wear mouthguards during contact sports or activities like biking.
